How our computer auctions work
Place a bid online any time before the auction closes. You can bid manually in the minimum increments shown, or set a maximum bid and our system will bid on your behalf up to your limit. The highest bid when the timer ends wins. Lots auto-extend by 2 minutes if a bid is placed in the closing minute.
Reading laptop and computer lot descriptions
Each lot title typically lists the make, model, processor, RAM, storage and display size. Watch for these terms in titles and descriptions, which set expectations before you bid:
- Boxed: in original packaging
- Unboxed: without retail packaging
- No storage / SSD removed: drive removed before listing, sold without an operating system
- Damage stated: hinge, bezel, screen or other cosmetic or functional issues described in the title
- Used: pre-owned, working condition as stated in the description
If anything is unclear about a specific lot, contact us before bidding.
UK postal delivery
Laptops, tablets, peripherals, printers and most accessories are marked Postal and shipped UK-wide. Bulk lots, larger desktop PCs, rack servers and oversized printers are typically Collection only from our saleroom. The fulfilment option is shown clearly on every lot page.
Buyer's premium and VAT apply on top of the hammer price. Current rates are shown on every lot page.
Frequently asked questions
What is a computer auction?
A computer auction is an online sale where buyers bid on individual laptops, desktops, tablets and IT equipment rather than paying a fixed price. At Simon Charles, our weekly computer auctions feature ex-business laptops, printers, monitors, server hardware and peripherals from major brands, with bidding typically starting at £1 per lot.
Are the laptops new, refurbished or used?
We list a mix. Most laptops in our auctions are pre-owned ex-business stock from clearance, end-of-lease and IT decommissioning channels. Some lots are brand new in original packaging, some are unboxed but in working condition, and some are sold as spares or for repair with damage stated in the title. Every lot description sets out the condition we have been given by the vendor, including known faults.
Do laptops come with an operating system or storage drive?
This varies by lot. Many ex-business laptops are listed with the storage drive removed before sale for data security reasons, and these lots are clearly titled "no storage" or similar. Lots that include storage may or may not have an operating system installed. Check the lot description before bidding, and budget for an SSD or hard drive if needed.
Do laptops come with chargers or accessories?
We make no guarantees on accessories. Some lots include a charger, some don't. Boxed lots may include the original retail accessories where present. Each lot description states what's included where known. If accessories are essential, contact us before bidding.
How much do business laptops typically sell for at auction?
Hammer prices vary widely depending on age, specification and condition. Older models with basic specifications often sell for £2 to £15. Mid-range business laptops with Intel i5 and 8GB RAM typically sell for £20 to £80. Newer machines with i7 processors, 16GB RAM and 512GB SSDs can attract higher final prices, though still well below new retail.
Are these laptops good for students, home use or business?
Most of our laptops are business-grade machines from brands like Dell, HP and Lenovo, built for durability and office work rather than gaming or video editing. They suit students, home office users, small businesses, charities and resellers. For gaming or specialist work, check the lot specification carefully or look for purpose-built lots.
Can I get a laptop delivered or do I have to collect?
Laptops, tablets, peripherals and most printers are marked Postal and shipped UK-wide. Larger desktop PCs, rack servers, bulk pallets and oversized printers are Collection only from our saleroom. The fulfilment option is shown clearly on every lot page before you bid.
What are your fees and charges?
All lots sold with us are subject to:
- 20% buyers premium*
- 5% internet fee*
- £2.00 lotting fee*
*All of which are plus VAT.
All lots unless otherwise specified are subject to 20% VAT on the hammer price of the item.
